Google has added to its collection of playable, interactive Google Doodles with the latest adaptation of its iconic homepage logo allowing users to play a Zamboni driver.

Celebrating the anniversary of Frank Zamboni’s birthday, the man responsible for creating the self-propelled ice resurfacing machine that share’s his name, the new interactive Google Doodle follows a long line of logo alterations that have caught users’ attentions and been responsible for many wasted work hours.

A simple but addictive mini game, the Zamboni themed playable Google Doodle sees users tasked with piloting a Zamboni machine across an ice rink, resurfacing areas disturbed by a fleet of skaters. Adding an element of thought into the mix, users have a limited fuel supply and as such must control the ice resurfacing machine in an efficient and economic matter.

Easy to play, the new Zamboni Google Doodle requires user of just the four directional keys with points awarded for the amount of damaged ice resurfaced. If users run out of fuel whilst still on a job, the Zamboni machine will stop, spit out its collection of ice scrapings and the game is over.

Far from the first time Google has launched a fully interactive adaptation of its logo, previous Google Doodles have seen the recognisable branding transformed into a collection of playable music instruments, a selection of Olympic sports and the now iconic Pac Man Google Doodle which was reported to have cost the global economy $120 million (£74.7m) in lost work hours.

Marking what would have been the 112th birthday of Frank Zamboni who died following a battle with cancer in 1988, today’s Google Doodle also honours the machine which, when introduced in 1949, saw the resurfacing of an ice rink transformed from a 90 minute, three man job into a 10 minute, one man task.
