Photoshop finally coming to Chromebooks with Adobe Creative Cloud

Google and Adobe have announced that Adobe Creative Cloud will soon be available on the Chrome OS.

That means a full version of the market-leading Adobe Photoshop picture editing software will be available to use on the cloud-centric Google Chromebook laptops.

The roll out will begin in the United States for education customers with a paid creative cloud membership.

“This streaming version of Photoshop is designed to run straight from the cloud to your Chromebook,” wrote Google on its Chrome blog.

“It’s always up-to-date and fully integrated with Google Drive, so there’s no need to download and re-upload files—just save your art directly from Photoshop to the cloud.”

Those eligible few interested in signing up for the Project Photoshop Streaming beta can do so at Adobe.com. The beta will also offer access from any Windows device with a Chrome browser or from a Chromebook.

“Project Photoshop Streaming enables selected participants to access Photoshop on Chromebooks,” Adobe wrote.

“Applications delivered via streaming are easy to access and easy to manage. Even better, streaming apps work directly with files in Google Drive, so no need to download and re-upload files – just edit directly in the cloud.”

Adobe and Google did not mention when the project will be coming to the UK and Europe, nor when it’ll be available to everyday consumers, but the presence of Photoshop on Chrome is another win for the rising Chromebook brand as it seeks to catch up to Windows and Mac OS X.

The lack of Photoshop has made it difficult for those who regularly use the software to justify investing in a Chromebook. Will today’s announcement make the platform a more viable alternative to the big two? Let us know your thoughts below.
