Philips has become the latest manufacturer to launch an OLED TV, unveiling the 55in 901F (55POS901F) at IFA 2016 in Berlin. Specifically designed with HDR content in mind, Philips is promising stunning image quality from its new TV.
OLED’s main benefit over LCD is its self-illuminating pixels, which remove the need for an always-on backlight. Philips is saying that 901F will have near-perfect blacks and bright whites thanks to a peak brightness of 540Nit. That’s not quite as bright as the LG OLED65E6, which has a peak brightness of more than 650Nit.

Colour accuracy is extremely important for any TV, and Philips has promised high-end performance from the 901F. Its wide-gamut panel is capable of producing 99% of the DCI-P3 WCG standard. Philips says the TV’s 17-bit colour booster is capable of producing a whopping 2,250 trillion colours.
Better detail is partly achieved via the Perfect Contrast system, with Local Contrast working with Micro Dimming Perfect technology. This combination can boost detail in darker parts of the image to enhance detail, while leaving dark areas in the rest of the picture alone. Philips has said the result gives a more natural image.
HDR is available thanks to Philips’ Perfect Pixel Ultra HD engine and the 901F is the first Philips TV to reach the company’s HDR Perfect standard.
Philips’ stand-out TV feature is Ambilight, so it’s good to see a three-sided version available, projecting colours behind the TV to match the on-screen action.

One issue with thinner TVs is that there’s less room for speakers, which can impact sound quality. To get around this, Philips has kitted out the 901F with a 30W 6.1 speaker system, with six front-facing drivers mounted in an integral slim-line, aluminium ‘soundbar’. A backfiring Triple Ring speaker, with integral bass port, delivers low frequency effects.
Smart TV features are powered by Android, with apps available from the Google Play Store and control via the provided remote, which has a built-in QWERTY keyboard.
The TV is due to go on sale towards the end of the year and will cost a pretty reasonable £3,000 in the UK and €3,500 in Europe.
