Sony has commented on the range of screen sizes it is offering customers, defending phablets as part of the mobile future.
Speaking to TrustedReviews, Pierre Perron, President of Sony Mobile North West Europe and Catherine Cherry, Marketing Director of Sony Mobile North West Europe said the smartphone screen diversity is intentional.
“We definitely think there’s still a market for a range of screen sizes. It depends what you’re going to do with your phone,” explained Cherry. “If you spend most of your time browsing the internet, watching movies then [the Xperia Z Ultra] is the phone for you.”
Despite it’s size, the Xperia Z Ultra maintains the design aesthetics of the Sony Xperia Z smartphone, with the Z's waterproofing retained within the expanded form factor.
“It’s really about you tell me what content or which experience do you want to have, and I’ll tell you which phone you should get, as opposed to how interested you are in the technical capabilities,” added Perron.
Phablets have been cropping up more and more on the smartphone market in the passing months. To compete with the Xperia Z Ultra is large screen smartphones like the Huawei Ascend Mate, Asus Fonepad Note 6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
“You’ll enjoy the [Xperia Z Ultra] basically if you are a movie watcher, you want that kind of experience, as opposed to [the Xperia Z1] which is predominantly more imaging centric, creative centric, sharing centric. It’s really about what you want to experience.”
