Pentax Q7 launched as Q10 upgrade with 1/1.7inch sensor

Pentax has launched the latest in its Q series range, the Pentax Q7, equipped with a new larger 1/1.7-inch image sensor.

Packing a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor that has been increased to 1/1.7-inches in size, the compact system camera (CSC) still retains the same 12.4-megapixel resolutions as the Pentax Q10 despite its increased size.

It claims to offer the best image quality of any Pentax Q series model to date.

The Pentax Q7 features a 1/1.7-inch image sensor which means the CSC can offer a wider viewing angle with the same lens mounted on it, changing the Pentax Q10’s crop factor of 5.5x to 4.6x with the Pentax Q7.

Still retaining the 12.4-megapixel resolution, the Pentax Q7 has a new Q Engine that provides a 10 per cent clock frequency improvement and shortens the start-up times. For shooting though, the new engine reduces lag times between exposures.

Pentax has also made improvements to the low-light autofocusing, Shake Reduction mechanism and the Quick Dial, which can now be assigned four different functions.

Capable of shooting Full 1080p HD movie clips at 30fps and stills at 5fps, the Q7 features a 3-inch LCD monitor and a host of mew image-processing tools built into the camera.

Like the newly announced Pentax K-50, the Pentax Q7 can be purchased in 120 different colour combinations, and will ship with the new lens for the Q series.

This new lens is called a “mount-shield lens” and features a fixed aperture of f/9.0 and when combined with the Pentax Q7 offers a focal length of 53mm.

All the existing K-Mount lenses will be compatible with the Q7, despite its increased size image sensor.

Pentax Q7 Release Date and Price
Due to be released sometime in September, the price for the Pentax Q7 has yet to be announced.
