In a sector of dwindling margins Parrot adds some exclusivity.
Like any technology sector, the digital photo frame market started with expensive products and high margins but with proliferation comes heavy price erosion. Parrot is looking to get some back…
With the launch of the ‘Parrot digital photo frame by Andree Putman’ (yes, it’s a descriptive title) the Bluetooth specialist has come up with an exclusive and premium product which it hopes will appeal to label freaks and those who appreciate ‘the finer things in life’.
Stylishly packaged and encased in a glass, the slim line (219 x 174 x 25mm) unit isn’t all beauty and no brains. It features an accelerometer which flips photos between portrait and landscape modes automatically (iPhone-style) when the frame is moved as well as Bluetooth v2.0 with EDR for transferring images directly from phones, laptops and (in some cases) printers and cameras.
Going old school there’s also a wired miniUSB port and SD/MMC card slots. Cleverly the frame resizes all pictures uploaded to it (holding up to 400) to save space and time. If I was being churlish it is possible to complain about the lack of WiFi, but with Bluetooth already aboard (and Parrot’s long standing rep in this area) this route is arguably more straightforward.
As for codec support, the trusty Jpeg and Gif are its formats of choice. Again, we’ve seen some frames display video but until frames become ”much” larger it seems a waste of time and storage compared to simply running your family vids off a monitor of TV.
Now comes the ouch. If the PDPFBAP (couldn’t resist the acronym) has your salivary glands pumping you’ll have to come up with £249.99 large and, what is more, it will initially only be available from May in the exclusive Few and Far retail store in South Kensington. That’s right, no online sales, no chain stores. The Parrot digital photo frame by Andree Putman will have a mass market launch later in the year, but that’s hardly the way to shop for such an item darlings!
Expect Parrot to capitalise further on such designer launches with other products during ’08 and in the meantime pray you find a career in corporate finance to support them…
