Panasonic re-entered the European smartphone market last week with the waterproof and dustproof Eluga Android smartphone and it has now extended the range with the Eluga power, a 5in version with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on board.
Looking at that screen, it is a HD panel with a resolution of 1280x720 and the Eluga power will be capable of playing back Full HD 1080p videos. The large screen size has not added too much bulk however with the phone measuring 9.6mm thick, compared to just 7.8mm for the 4.3in Eluga.
The phone will be powered by a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor running at 1.5GHz and will run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Like its smaller cousin, the Panasonic Eluga power has been given IP57 certification which means it can withstand immersion in water to up to one metre for at least 30 minutes and is virtually dustproof.
There will be 8GB of internal storage available which is expandable via microSD card up to 32GB more. The 1,800mAh battery supports superfast charging with a 30 minute charge giving you 50 per cent power and getting up to 80 per cent takes just 57 minutes. There’s also an NFC chip on board and an eight megapixel rear camera with 8x digital zoom capable of shooting 1080p video.
Panasonic has told us that it hopes the Eluga power will be available in the UK around April with pricing being announced then. We'll be getting hands-on time with the Eluga smartphone in Barcelona and bringing you our first impressions very soon.
