British Android gaming enthusiasts can now pre-order the Ouya console from Game, which is offering the console at £99.99 with free delivery.
Although a UK release date has yet to be confirmed, with the Game website still displaying a TBD launch, Ouya is meant to go on sale in the US from early June.
The Android-powered game console will ship with one controller for that £99.99 price tag, but additional Bluetooth controllers are also available for pre-order from Game for £39.99 apiece.
Anyone who backed the console in its successful Kickstarter campaign will be receiving their Ouya console soon, as shipping for loyal supporters begins today.
Running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Ouya is designed to play modified Android games in Full 1080p HD resolutions, all contained within the Google Play store. Doing away with the need for physical disc-based games, Ouya is one of many Android-based consoles soon to come to market.
With competitors like the GameStick or Project Shield also on the horizon, the Ouya console is shipping with a pretty decent set of specs including a Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core SoC with 1GB of RAM, a USB 2.0 port, HDMI support, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity and 8GB of Flash storage to boot.
Julie Uhrman, Ouya’s CEO, confirmed there would be an annual Ouya release, keeping the console in line with the lifecycle of high-end smartphones.
“Our strategy is very much similar to the mobile strategy. There will be a new Ouya every year. There will be an Ouya 2 and an Ouya 3,” she said in a post-D.I.C.E interview. “We’ll take advantage of faster, better processors, take advantage of prices falling. So if we can get more than 8GB of Flash in our box, we will.”
