The Oppo N1 has been officially launched at a dedicated event in Beijing, featuring a rotating 13-megapixel camera.

Aiming to be a camera-centric device to rival the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom and Nokia Lumia 1020, the Oppo N1 has a swivelling unit that aims to provide a single 13-megapixel camera that can be the rear and front-facing snapper at once.

The Oppo N1 release date has been set for October, but there’s been no official word on a UK price for the smartphone. The Chinese price for the Oppo N1 is 3498 yuan, which equates to around £360 in the UK.

Oppo N1 Features

The Oppo N1 has a 5.9-inch 1080p display that runs an entirely new OS known as ColourOS. The new OS is the result of a 10-month development period that involved 243 developers, 20,000 testers and 43 new patents.

Based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, ColourOS introduces unique features like a live weather theme that interact with the on-screen app icons and a drop down board for drawing patterns that launch specific apps.

Oppo’s new OS also brings CyanogenMod on board, with a special edition of the Oppo N1 launched with the ROM pre-installed.

The 13-megapixel camera can rotate up to 206-degrees, but will lock into any position the user chooses without moving. It has a stacked CMOS sensor, f/2.0 wide aperture and a dual-mode LED flash.

That swivelling camera unit has been put through its paces with a 100,000-time rotation test, which equates to 40 rotations a day for seven years.

Powered by a 3610mAh battery, the Oppo N1 has a 1.7Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor and 2GB of RAM. The internal storage options available are 16GB or 32GB, but the smartphone lacks a microSD card slot.

One of the other unique features of the Oppo N1 is its O-Touch Panel, that lets users scroll, tap or take photos using a rear trackpad, similar to that featured in the PS Vita.

In the box with the Oppo N1 is the O-Click keychain remote that connects to the smartphone when within a 50 metre range. This circular disc functions as a remote for the Oppo N1’s camera and as a way to locate the smartphone by triggering an alarm within the device.
