Only 50 per cent of PS4 owners subscribe to PlayStation Plus

Sam Loveridge

Sony has revealed only half of PS4 owners subscribe to PlayStation Plus, despite its obvious benefits.

Speaking during an investor call, PlayStation CEO Kaz Hirai said that only around 2 million PS4 owners have signed up for PlayStation Plus.

“Of all the 4.2 million PS4s that have moved into the hands of consumers, more than half of those people have signed up for the PS Plus service”, said Hirai.

Neither Hirai or Sony CEO Masaru Kato would offer a specific PS4 PlayStation Plus subscription number.

Sony’s previous sales projections of 15 million PS3 and PS4s combined by the end of March still stands, despite sales performance fluctuations.

The PS4 is selling above expectations, but Sony did say that the PS3 sales downturn is more acute than originally predicted.

PlayStation Plus offers access to online multiplayer for PS4. The membership covers all three Sony consoles – PS4, PS3 and PS Vita – and offers game and content discounts as well as access to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game collection.

Every month, the Instant Game Collection offers six games per month to pay for free across the three consoles, which will always be accessible as long as you keep subscribing to PlayStation Plus.

A PlayStation Plus membership costs £5.49 per month, or £11.99 per three months. You can even subscribe for a whole year for £39.99.

Currently the PlayStation Plus games on offer are Outlast, Metro: Last Light, BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2 and ModNation Racers.

Surely 50% is a very good attach rate for their paid subscription service. It's roughly equivalent to Xbox Live Gold, which has always been viewed as a massive success for Microsoft. Not sure "only" is an appropriate word to describe Sony's rapid success with their PS Plus service.

This surprises me, considering the PS+ freebies offered since November (Resogun, Contrast, Don't Starve, and Outlast) pretty much cover the cost of subscribing.

I'm waiting for there to be a worthwhile game to be available before signing up.

I agree, 50% is a great attach rate. I'm surprised this is being spun negatively. Is there nothing else to report Trusted Reviews?

"Only"? Plus is an awesome service, but there's still people who don't go online at all with their console. And of those who do, not all play online. And unlike MS Sony didn't put all their features behind a paywall. You can still even play the F2P games. I don't know why you're spinning this as a negative when Sony were clearly releasing the figures to show what a success the service is.

I think it was a bad idea paying to go on line with my ps4 never did with my ps3 it was free now they have jumped on the band wagon with xbox I did not like paying for Xbox live as I pay my broad band any way it's just a way of hitting people in the pocket all the time

February 9, 2014, 11:23 pm

It's not a band wagon. The reason you're paying now is for better security and faster download times. how long did it take you to update a game on the PS3 ? and remember how pissed people were when they got their accounts hacked ?

I own PS Plus on my my PS3. Today, I logged into my new PS4 on my same account and went to the PSN store and my PS Plus membership did NOT kick in. What do I have to do now to get it to work?

February 10, 2014, 10:37 pm

thats weird, call sony cuz as soon as you put in your account info and you go into your account you should have plus.

February 10, 2014, 10:40 pm

Oh please, that is not true, it is not faster than the ps3 at downloading, its actually slower. And you're getting the same security on the ps3 and vita and you dont have to pay for them. Its jumping on the bandwagon like the other guy said and its all MS's and it customers fault, MS started this trend and all the customer and fanboys paid for it gladly like idiots. And Sony saw that, and wanted a piece of that pie. Thanks MS

Then you are not a gamer. There's been plenty

Read what Commander Jim wrote

February 10, 2014, 10:44 pm

Exactly, XBL has always been reported as about 50% for gold and that was bragged about, but when Sony has around 50%, its "only". The bias is so obvious

February 10, 2014, 10:45 pm

Why would you be surprised? 95% of these sites are fanboy ran and they all have their fanboy hating on the other side agendas, take note of how this guy treats each side from now on

February 11, 2014, 4:53 am

Still blaming MS for something that they had nothing to do? From what coffers do you think Sony could afford a free online service for the PS4? Just admit Sony is simply another corporation trying to survive in a tough world. Geez.
