OnePlus in talks to make Windows Phone handset

OnePlus, the maker of the ridiculously good-value OnePlus One, is in talks with Microsoft over making a Windows Phone device.

The Chinese company has made waves this year with its zero-margin OnePlus One – a high-end 5.5-inch smartphone running on the Android-derived CyanogenMod OS, which sells for half the price of competing phones.

Now the company is looking to branch out into other areas and operating systems. Speaking with the Indian Economic Times, director of OnePlus Global Carl Pei revealed: “We have had discussions with Microsoft over a Windows Phone smartphone. We are still looking into it.”

So far it’s been left to Nokia to produce affordable yet high-quality Windows Phone 8 devices, including the recent ‘affordable flagship,’ the Nokia Lumia 830.

You’d expect a OnePlus Windows Phone effort to push even higher on the specs and lower on the price.

As the report also notes, OnePlus is planning a direct successor to the OnePlus One. The OnePlus 2 was officially confirmed as being in the works late last month, during a Reddit AMA session with two company representatives.

The OnePlus 2 will arrive in the second or third quarter of 2015. In the meantime, we’ll be dreaming of a high-end Nokia Lumia 1520 rival with a sub-£250 price tag.
