OnePlus: Touch latency will be ‘optimised’ in Nougat update

UPDATE 01/12/2016: OnePlus has confirmed to TrustedReviews it is working on optimising touch latency for the upcoming Android Nougat update.

The update is set to arrive simultaneously for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T before the end of the year.

What’s more, the user who originally posted about touch latency on the OnePlus 3 has expanded on his original comments via Twitter.

Arter97 says in his latest post that the touch latency on the handset is “acceptable for most people.”

Original story:

OnePlus scored another home run with its newly released OnePlus 3T, adding a few new features to the already stellar OnePlus 3 to create an impressive handset.

The phone is now available to order in the US and Europe, and so far the launch seems to have gone without a hitch – barring a slight issue that some users are reporting with the device’s touch latency.

Over on the OnePlus forums, user arter97 described the problem, which he says affects the OnePlus 3 too, in an extended post, writing: “Currently, the “move sensitivity” on the OnePlus 3 is set too big, which results in latency.

“If you touch the screen and move the finger around very little(like 3~5mm), it won’t be registered as a scroll. This is because the “move sensitivity” is set too big.

“We are on a 5.5″ screen. I think it’ll be totally fine to reduce the threshold a bit. (If the threshold is set too small, a tap will be registered as a scroll. If it’s set too big, a scroll will be registered as a tap and increase latency.)”

The post resulted in a Reddit thread, set up to “raise awareness” of the issue, where numerous users reported the same experience and urged OnePlus to address the problem.

Now, the company’s co-founder Carl Pei has responded to the feedback on Twitter, saying the upcoming Android Nougat update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T takes precedence:

He also followed up this tweet with a response to another user, urging OnePlus owners to “keep things in perspective,” and reminding them that “for its entire lifecycle, no one gave us this feedback for OP3”.

OnePlus has previously tweeted that it is working on a Nougat update for the OnePlus 3, and presumably the OnePlus 3T, and it seems this remains the priority for the time being.

And in a separate Reddit thread, users seem to agree with Carl Pei, with one writing: “I think OnePlus’s priorities are right here. Nougat should have higher priority for the company, especially since they’ve promised to deliver before the year ends.”

Another writes: “Just got my OnePlus 3t today.. didn’t know there was an issue until I saw this subreddit.”

The Nougat update is said to set for a December rollout, so there shouldn’t be too long to wait until the two phones get their upgrades and the company turns its attention to the latency feedback.
