Olympus has unveiled three new additions to its Tough camera range, the Olympus Stylus Tough TG-2, TG-830 and TG-630.
All three are freezeproof to -10°C and offer a degree of shock and
waterproofing, while the TG-2 and TG-830 are also crushproof up to a
weight of 100kg.
Olympus Stylus Tough TG-2
The new flagship of the range is the TG-2 which is waterproof to 15m and
shockproof to 2.1m and has a surprisingly wide 25-100mm equivalent lens
that is f/2.0 at its wide angle end. This is backed up by a 12megapixel
sensor that also shoots Full HD video and up to 240fps slow motion video.
An intriguing extra feature is the Super Macro mode which effectively boosts the zoom to 200mm when used in macro mode, which itself works up to 1cm away. You also get inbuilt GPS and compass for keeping track of where you were and what you were looking at.
A degree of manual control is offered thanks to an aperture priority mode, though primarily this is still a point and shoot model. It is priced at £349.99 with a release date of early February.
Olympus Stylus Touch TG-830
The next model in the range sees toughness drop down a notch with waterproofing now only rated at 10m but the zoom range has increased from 4x to 5x. However, this increase comes at the expense of wide angle reach with only a 28mm equivalent, while the telephoto stretches to 140mm. Also, maximum aperture takes a big hit with it streatching from only f/3.9 to f/5.9.
You still get the GPS and compass, though, as well as the super zoom modes. Priced at £249.99, the TG-830 release date is mid-March.
Olympus Stylus Touch TG-630
The final model in the new range is the TG-630, which strips out the GPS and compass and drops waterproofing to just 5m and schockproofing to 1.5m, plus it looses the 100kg crushproof rating of the other two models. It does at least offer the same optics and sensor as the TG-830, though.
Priced at £169.99, the TG-630 release date is set at February 2013.
