Oculus Rift to get motion control tech too?

Oculus Rift could get own-brand motion control technology accessories in the future, according to a new report.

The company responsible for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, Oculus VR, has been developing motion gaming controllers behind the scenes.

These controllers should help you play games using your hand and body movements, which together with the Oculus Rift headset should make for a pretty immersive experience.

However, if this report is correct, the idea Oculus is developing its own motion gaming kit might upset other companies already beavering away on the same kind of technology.

Hardware manufacturers have already invested millions into developing the technologies and have gone as far as to partner with software makers to support the hardware.

Of course, these motion tracking controllers could extend a lot farther than just gaming.

Facebook’s vision for Oculus is for it to become a platform for “many other experiences” beyond gaming, including the likes of sports, healthcare, education and films.

These controls could help you navigate on-screen menus or interact with objects in a more natural-feeling way.

There’s no word as to when Oculus could out its own motion controllers, but it could be at the same time as we see the commercial launch of the Oculus Rift itself.

Currently there’s no official release date for the Oculus Rift, but Oculus VR revealed it is creating new prototypes of its products with higher quality, more specialised parts following the Facebook acquisition in March.

The most recent Oculus Rift developer kit, DK2, started shipping this month and features dual 960 x 1080p HD resolution, low persistence OLED displays, higher framerate and six dot positional tracking.
