Oculus has announced that pre-orders for the Oculus Rift Developer Kit 2 (DK2) have now opened, a year after the original dev kit was released.
DK2 offers developers a better look at a prototype that is closer to the final version than ever seen before.
“We’ve spent the past year working on building Developer Kit 2 as an update to our original Development Kit. Something that gets a lot closer to what we want the consumer version to beand lets developers make much better virtual reality experiences,” explained Palmer Luckey, Oculus founder.
Building on the Crystal Cove prototype unveiled at CES 2014, DK2 introduces many of the new technologies Oculus has introduced including a high-definition display.
“DK2 has lower latency, higher framerate, higher resolution and low persistence along with full six dot positional tracking. All these combined allow for much better gameplay experiences and a much more comfortable user experiences,” added Luckey.
The latest developer kit uses a low persistence OLED display to reduce motion blur and judder, which should in turn limit the motion sickness issues. The dual displays have a HD 960 x 1080p resolution too.
Like the Crystal Cove, DK2 uses low-latency positional head tracking via an external camera that can more accurately detect your movements.
“It’s really not that there’s just one thing that’s better about DK2, it’s about how all these new features come together to really take the experience to a whole other level,” said Nate Mitchell, VP of Product at Oculus.
The new DK2 also has a built-in latency sensor, a USB accessory port, a redesigned SDK and the removal of the infamous control box.
Oculus has also further optimised the Unity and Unreal Engine 4 integration with DK2.
DK2 is $350 (£210) at launch and you can pre-order it now from the Oculus VR website.
