OaSense is a presence-detecting shower head that saves you money

Showering is a lot more efficient than taking a bath, and now there’s a way to make it even less wasteful.

OaSense is a smart shower head that detects when you’re under it. Move out of the way – to reach the shampoo, say – and it’ll pause the water flow, meaning no wasted water. The makers claim it uses up to 50 per cent less water than a standard shower. Which should save you money on your bills.

It fits any shower and comes in a number of different colours. Four replaceable AA batteries will keep it powered for over a year. And it gives decent water pressure, unlike low flow shower heads.

You can also switch between the motion sensing and standard shower modes with one button.

It’s not the first smart shower we’ve seen. The Nebia smart shower blew up last summer, thanks in part to Apple CEO Tim Cook investing in it. Nebia claims it uses 70 per cent less water, by creating a mist effect by atomising water into millions of tiny droplets with 10 times more surface area than a standard shower. Sure it’s pricey, but it looks like the better bet.

OaSense is under halfway to its funding goal and only has three days to go. Let’s hope it makes it. If it’s successful, it’ll ship in August.
