Nvidia has confirmed its latest device, the Nvidia Shield Tablet, is getting Android 5.0 Lollipop on Tuesday, November 18.
Ahead of the majority of other Android tablets, the Shield Tablet is getting a lick of Android 5.0 Lollipop next week.
Nvidia revealed back in August to TrustedReviews that the Shield Tablet would get the Android 5.0 update as close as possible to release.
“We are very well known for ensuring our devices always patch up as close to market release as possible,” said Nvidia’s Ben Barraondo at the time. “We have listened very closely to the feedback from users and haven’t added any skinning or overlays. It’s just the standard Nexus experience”.
Android 5.0 Lollipop is quite a major aesthetic overhaul to the Android operating system. It introduces what Google is calling its Material Design, featuring interface layers and drop shadows to make a more 3D UI, rather than the flatter look adopted by its rival, iOS 8.
Existing Nexus devices like the Google Nexus 5 will start receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update today, so the Nvidia Shield isn’t far behind the Google devices for the update.
The Shield Tablet features an 8-inch 1920 x 1200p full HD display running on the 2.2GHz Nvidia Tegra K1 processor with 2GB of RAM.
It takes advantage of the new gaming technologies coming with Android 5.0 Lollipop too. The Android Extension Pack (AEP) opens up new possibilities for mobile game developers to push the graphics capabilities.
AEP ports over PC graphics features like dynamic lighting, tessellation and global illumination, among other things, to make sure mobile gaming pushes its hardware to the maximum.
