Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X price revealed

Nvidia has revealed the price of its upcoming new flagship graphics card the Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X, with the single-chip card set to cost a cool $999USD.

The new card, which was announced out of the blue a couple of weeks ago, is Nvidia’s most powerful yet and is set to increase the company’s performance advantage over rival AMD whose top-end card, the Radeon R9 290X, is already some way behind the Nvidia GTX 980.

The company also revealed more details of what’s under the hood of the card. Its Maxwell-based GPU sports 8 billion transistors and packs in 3,072 CUDA cores, while there’s also a whopping 12GB of memory for it to utilise.

This allows Nvidia to claim astonishing figures of 7 TFLOPs for single precision and 0.2 TFLOPs for double precision calculations. In comparison AMD’s top card has 6.2billion transistors and can manage 4.84TFLOPs.

This astronomical price and the 12GB of RAM again marks this Titan card out as being something of a prosumer crossover product, like previous Titan models. While the 12GB of RAM is somewhat useful for gaming at 4k resolutions it’s still unlikely to be utilised by most games.

Instead it’s likely Nvidia will follow up the release of the Titan X with a more modest card – a GTX 980 ti perhaps – which will retain most of the same chip performance but drop the clock speeds and memory amount, just as it did with the 780ti.
