Nvidia has announced it will cram desktop GPUs into a new “enthusiast class notebook” range.
Rather than redefining what we know as a gaming laptop, Nvidia is instead aiming at those who love overclocking and tinkering with their hardware.
The new enthusiast class notebooks will offer record performance, premium components and will be specifically built for overclocking.
Each one will contain the GTX 980 GPU, with the same cores and same clocks as the desktop version. In fact the two are nearly indentical, with the notebook version just having slightly better binning, Nvidia explains.
The new laptop range will allow enthusiast gamers to access anunlocked GPU and CPU with enthusiast controls for overclocking – all created by the OEMs themselves, rather than Nvidia though.
Because a notebook is a thermally constrained environment, there will be some limitations on tweaking certain aspects of the graphics performance, to protect you from completely overheating your new notebook.
But the enhanced performance in these new notebooks will allow you to max out the latest games in full 1080p HD. The examples Nvidia gave us were as follows:
- Witcher 3 running at 61fps
- GTA 5 running at 89fps
- Mad Max running at 117fps
- Metal Gear Solid 5 running at 84fps
- Killing Floor 2 running at 62fps
The power of the Nvidia GTX 980 in the new notebook range also allows them to drive up to 6 million pixels. That’s games running at ultra settings on three ultra-wide screen panels.

Of course, there’s also another great boon for nabbing yourself one of these notebooks. And that’s VR.
If you remember, the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive’s recommended specs includes the Nvidia GTX 980 GPU, meaning all the notebooks in this range are certified for VR.
Nvidia states that these laptops aren’t for the mainstream consumer. These are enthusiast notebooks, made especially for the overclockers out there.
As for the laptops themselves, you’re looking at the Aorus X7 DT, ASUS GX700V0, Clevo P670DM, Clevo P779DM, MSI GT72 and MSI GT80.
The majority of the models will arrive in early October, but you’ll have to wait until November for the water-cooled Asus GX700V0.
