Scientists in North Korean claim to have developed the first hangover-free alcohol.
The news comes courtesy of an article in the DPRK’s Pyongyang Times, titled “Liquor wins quality medal for preserving national smack”.
According to the curious piece, scientists replaced sugar with scorched rice to save drinkers from the burden of a hangover.
“Koryo Liquor, which is made of six-year-old Kaesong Koryo insam, known as being highest in medicinal effect, and the scorched rice, is highly appreciated by experts and lovers as it is suave and causes no hangover,” reads the article.
The drink has reportedly been in development for a number of years at the Taedonggang Foodstuff Factory.
Kim-Jong Un, the current leader of North Korea
Speaking about the new beverage to NK News, Chosong Exchange’s Andray Abrahamnian, a regular visitor to the DPRK, said: “I haven’t tried that brand I think, though I have had some other Insam liquors. They’re okay – I associate ginseng with its medicinal properties, though, so am not keen on it as a tasty treat.”
He added: “There are some high-quality liquors made in North Korea, though in my experience there is no such thing as hangover-free booze anywhere in the world.”
North Korea is no stranger to odd headlines; the country’s late Supreme Leader Kim-Jong Il claimed a number of mythical accolades, including:
- Inventing the hamburger
- Being a master golfer – including a round of golf with 11 holes-in-one
- Never using the toilet
- Curing Aids, Ebola, MERS, and SARS
- Having a supertnatural mountain birth that spawned a star and a double rainbow
