Barnes & Noble has launched the Nook Simple Touch Glowlight in the UK to take on the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite.

The Nook Simple Touch Glowlight has launched alongside the Nook Simple Touch at various UK retailers for £109 and £79 respectively.

The Nook Simple Touch Glowlight pips the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite to the post in featuring a front-lit display, making it the first e-ink device that can be read comfortably in the dark. According to a Barnes & Noble-commissioned study, around 50 per cent of Brits complain that their partner's reading light keeps them awake, so there's clearly a market there.

The Nook Simple Touch is essentially the same device, minus the Glowlight feature, as you'd probably expect from the name.

Both devices feature a 6-inch touchscreen, around two months of battery life (one with the Glowlight's light turned on) from a single charge, and a weight of around 200g - though the Nook Touch Glowlight is around 15g lighter. They both come with 2GB of storage as standard, which is enough for around 1,000 books.

Barnes & Noble has made the Nook Simple Touch Glowlight and Nook Simple Touch available from today at a number of UK retailers, including John Lewis, Argos, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Dixons, Waitrose, Blackwell’s, and Foyles.

To accompany the UK release, Barnes & Noble has finally launched a UK-specific Nook website. As well as enabling you to purchase the Nook Simple Touch Glowlight and the Nook Simple Touch, it enables you to pre-order the Nook HD and the Nook HD+.

These comprise a 7-inch and a 9-inch high definition tablet respectively, and will directly take on the Amazon Kindle Fire HD range - not to mention the Apple iPad and Apple iPad mini - on performance and price. Both Nook HD tablets will be available in late November.
