After what seemed like an eternity, Nokia has finally unveiled its first Windows Phone handset, the Lumia 800.

The Lumia 800, previously known as the Sea Ray, is basically a re-badged N9 – which is no bad thing. As with the Meego-running N9, the Lumia 800 will be encased in a single-piece, injection-molded polycarbonate shell which according to Nokia “screams premium.” It will be available in black, cyan and pink.

There was even a little dig at the death grip problem with the iPhones with the Lumia 800 having “outstanding antenna performance” according to Kevin Shields, Senior Vice President of Program and Product Management for the smart devices.

The Lumia 800 will have a 3.7in WVGA 800 x 480 AMOLED screen and will be powered by a single-core 1.4GHz MSM8255 Snapdragon processor with 512MB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. There will also be hardware acceleration for better graphics. As well as the local storage, Lumia 800 owners will get 25GB of SkyDrive cloud storage.

On the real is an 8-megapixel camera with an f2.2 Carl Zeiss lens and an LED flash which has been optimised for low-light performance. Of course the Lumia will ship with Windows Phone 7.5 (or Mango) but Nokia has added a number of tweaks, specific to the Nokia handsets. Nokia Drive, a turn-by-turn voice guidance app, will come pre-installed on the Lumia 800 and will be free to use.

It will allow users to download maps ahead of time and should you stray off the map, it will automatically download the map to get you to your destination. Nokia Music will give you access to hundreds of curated playlists in Mix Radio, which you will be able to download for offline listening, and it will again be free for Lumia 800 owners.

The final tweak Nokia has given to the Windows Phone platform is an ESPN app, which gives you access to a huge array of information on many sports, including scores, news and videos. Stephen Elop talked about Lumia being a “new light, a new dawn” for Nokia.

He called the Lumia 800 the first real Windows Phone, which HTC, Samsung and others may take issue with. At the press conference we saw a live link up with the factory in Finland and saw the first Lumia 800s being packed and shipped and Elop said the 800 would be available here in the UK next month, along with five other European countries.

The US won’t be seeing the handset until 2012 and when it does ship will cost in the region of €420 before taxes. We will be going hands on with the Lumia 800 here at Nokia World and bringing you our first impressions very soon. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

So far Orange, Three, T-Mobile and Vodafone have all confirmed they will be offering the Lumia 800 in the UK next month. The phone is now avaialble to pre-order on the Nokia website and you can get a free handset on deals as low as £31-a-month on a 24 month contract.
