Nokia quad-core 1080p phablet coming September

Nokia will announce a Full HD smartphone-tablet hybrid with a quad-core processor later this year, according to recent rumours.

The suggestion comes through My Nokia Blog from a source familiar with Nokia’s plans, but apparently “no longer on the team.”

This new device will be the largest Nokia device yet, with the current champion the recently announced Nokia Lumia 625 (pictured) and its 4.7-inch display. There’s no news on exactly how big this new phablet will be, other than that it will be “definitely more than 5 (inches).” If other recent internet rumours are to be believed, it could be around 5.5-inches.

Of course, the aforementioned Nokia Lumia 625 is an entry-level large-screen device, and so features a decidedly non-HD 800 x 480 resolution. This new Nokia phablet will be at the opposite end of the spectrum, if reports are to be believed.

The Nokia phablet could also quite possibly be the first Windows Phone 8 device to sport a Full HD 1080p display. Microsoft’s mobile OS is currently limited to a 720p resolution, but that’s set to change with the GDR3 update set for later this year.

This software update will also enable the implementation of quad-core processors, which just what the new Nokia phablet will include. The current Lumia range is powered by dual-core CPUs.

It’s believed that Nokia will hold a press event on September 26, where this phablet and quite possibly a full-on tablet will be introduced.
