Nokia Music+ subscription service unveiled

Nokia has launched Nokia Music , a paid extension of its existing Nokia Mix Radio service that looks to take on Spotify.

The original Nokia Music service, which was launched with the Nokia Lumia 800 in 2011, continues to allow you to form playlists and stream tracks at no charge and with no sign-up.

Now Music will give you unlimited access to this library of music for just €3.99 per month. That includes unlimited skipping and downloads, as well as an eight-fold boost to audio quality.

Nokia Music subscribers will also be able to receive lyrics, either in a scrolling karaoke-style format or a simple scrollable display.

In addition, Nokia Music allows you to access your playlists on your desktop computer, or through a smart TV or another connected device.

“This is for people who care enough about music to pay something for more quality and choice, but don’t want to pay €9.99 monthly,” says Nokia’s Jyrki Rosenberg, in a sly dig at existing music subscription services like Spotify.

So what’s the catch? As with the original Nokia Music service (which continues to operate), you can’t search for specific tracks. This is all about playlists, so you can put in up to three artist’s names in order to create a themed playlist, but you can’t micromanage the content of those playlists.

Nokia Music will be rolling out in the next few weeks.

What do you think of this new Nokia Music offering? Is it a tempting cheaper alternative to Spotify, or do those restrictions put you off? Let us know via the TrustedReviews Twitter and Facebook feeds, or through the comments box below.
