Nokia Lumia 920 may be an Everything Everywhere 4G exclusive

Nokia’s Lumia 920 is heading to the UK and it looks like the 4G-ready Windows Phone 8 smartphone may be exclusive to Everything Everywhere, the joint venture run by Orange and T-Mobile.

Everything Everywhere recently got the go-ahead to launch 4G services on an existing part of its mobile spectrum, although this decision may be challenged by its rivals.

Other UK mobile operators will be able to begin 4G later in 2013, following the last stage of digital TV switchover and the resulting auction of spare airwaves.

The likely November launch for the Nokia Lumia 920 would coincide with Everything Everywhere’s 4G rollout, and as it will be the only provider able to deliver 4G mobile broadband at this stage, it makes sense for Nokia to be talking to them.

The Lumia 920 was unveiled by Nokia last week. According the Financial Times, Nokia said it is considering a strategy to sell the phones initially through selected mobile operators and retail channels.

For the UK, the FT believes that Everything Everywhere will be the first to sell the device, citing “two people with knowledge of the situation,” however there has been no official confirmation from either Nokia or EE.

The paper points out that this approach is different to Nokia’s usual business model in the UK but it’s similar to the 2007 launch of the Apple iPhone, which was an O2 exclusive to begin with.

The FT also reports that the Nokia Lumia 920 will work on the 4G frequencies that Everything Everywhere plans to use this year, and at least four other frequency bands used around the world. EE’s 4G brand and services are expected to be announced next week.

If you are not with either Orange or T-Mobile – and Everything Everywhere does become an exclusive launch partner for the Lumia 920 – then you will have to be ready to switch if you want to be an early adopter.
