The budget entry to the Windows Phone-powered Nokia Lumia series, the Lumia 610, will be released at the beginning of June - within the next fortnight. It'll be one of the very cheapest ways to join the Windows Phone elite, available on contracts of around £15 a month, or £150 SIM-free.

Nokia's Emma Gilmartin announced that the Nokia Lumia 610 will be available within the first week of June. The budget smartphone will be widely available too, heading to high street stores like Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u as well as several of the big networks, including O2 and Orange.

The Nokia Lumia 610 is the cheapest way to get a Windows Phone mobile, without searching around for a last-gen bargain. In order to get the price down to an impressively-low £150, Microsoft has had to significantly relax the hardware guidelines of the platform, though.

Previously, Windows Phone devices had to have 1GHz processors and 512MB of RAM, among other things. The Nokia Lumia 610 has an 800MHz processor and just 256MB of RAM. Cut-down Windows devices like this will have somewhat-limited abilities, with reduced app support. Microsoft - predictably - claims that these lower-power devices will still provide a good experience, though. Windows Phone Tango made these changes, also seen in evidence in phones like the ZTE Tania.

Other specs of the Nokia Lumia 610 include a 3.7in 480 x 800 pixel screen, 5MP camera and 8GB of internal memory. The phone comes in four colours - white, black, pink and cyan.

Tempted by a budget Windows phone? Put off by the reduced specs? Have your say in the comments.
