Nokia Lumia 520 launched as budget Windows Phone 8 handset

Nokia has expanded its collection of Windows Phone 8 handsets, with the Nokia Lumia 520 formally unveiled as an entry-level addition to Microsoft’s mobile OS.

Following the same design traits of the high-end Nokia Lumia 920, the newly announced Nokia Lumia 520 features a raft of mid-range innards alongside a more wallet-friendly price tag, making the Windows Phone 8 OS accessible to a wider user base.

“The Nokia Lumia 520 is a fun and affordable way to upgrade to Windows Phone 8,” Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia’s Head of Design said, unveiling the handset during the company’s MWC 2013 press conference this morning. “Whilst it is affordable it comes with a number of high-end features.

Playing host to a 4-inch, 800 x 480p WVGA touchscreen display, the Nokia Lumia 520 builds on the Finnish manufacturer’s now customary vibrant Lumia designs, with the curved backed handset set to be made available in a raft of bright hues, including cyan and red.

Building on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 OS with a selection of powerful components, the Nokia Lumia 520 features a 1GHz dual-core processor alongside 8GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD to up to 64GB worth of storage.

With a 5-megapixel rear-mounted camera pairing a second, forward-facing snapper, Ahtisaari, who suggested that the Nokia Lumia 520 is for those looking for “self-expression,” added: “The Nokia Lumia 520 comes with the same digital camera lenses as the Nokia Lumia 920.” Further enhancing the handset’s camera capabilities, the snapper features auto focus and 720p HD video recording capabilities.

With 512MB of RAM, the Nokia Lumia 520 specs sheet is further enhanced by a svelte 9.9mm thick form factor, a 124g heft and an integrated 1430mAh battery, tipped to offer up to 9.6 hours of talk time.

With Nokia CEO Stephen Elop suggesting that the “Nokia Lumia 520 is scheduled to rollout from this quarter,” the manufacturer’s head revealed that a Nokia Lumia 520 UK release date will take place in Q2 2013.

What’s more, making a the Windows Phone 8 brand available to a broader selection of users, the Nokia Lumia 520 price tag has been set at 139 euros, prior to taxes and carrier charges.
