Nokia enters the tablet race with the Nokia Lumia 2520

The Nokia Lumia 2520 has been officially unveiled, with the 10.2-inch device marking the Finnish manufacturer’s first effort on the tablet scene.

Having been the subject of much rumour and speculation in recent weeks, the Nokia Lumia 2520 has entered the realms of reality during the company’s Nokia World conference in Abu Dhabi. Although the company’s first tablet offering, the Nokia Lumia 2520 comes three years after the likes of Apple and Samsung first joined the now highly competitive tablet market.

“The award winning design and revolution camera with have introduced with the Lumia smartphones is coming to the tablet market,” Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said. “I would like to introduce you to the Nokia Lumia 2520.

He added: “The Nokia Lumia 2520 is the first Nokia tablet and a great addition to the Lumia family. We designed the Nokia Lumia 2520 to feel great in your hand and be truly portable and get it out of the house.”

Set to go head-to-head with the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2, both of which are expected to be unveiled later today, the Nokia Lumia 2520 features list shows intent on the tablet scene from the ailing manufacturer.

Powered by Windows RT 8.1, the Nokia Lumia 2520 comes pre-installed with all manner of Microsoft themed software, with Office and Outlook making the cut. Powered by a Qualcomm 8974 chipset, the Nokia Lumia 2520 will hit retailers later this year, going head-to-head with the new Microsoft Surface 2.

Despite having struggled to push its Windows Phone filled, Lumia-branded smartphones into the mainstream in recent months, Nokia has confirmed it will attempt to tackle the highly competitive tablet market, suggesting the Lumia 2520 is the most portable tablet to date.
Featuring LTE 4G connectivity options alongside the standard Wi-Fi options, the 10.2-inch screen boasts a 650 nits brightness rating for improved visibility in all manner of lighting conditions. A Gorilla Glass coating will provide added protection.

Like its Lumia-branded smartphone siblings, the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet will sport a polycarbonate body in a range of vibrant colours. With red and cyan models having already done the rounds via a number of pre-release leaks, the manufacturer has now confirmed that back and white models will also be made available.

Continuing the manufacturer’s trend of offering impressive cameras on its portable devices, the Nokia Lumia 2520 camera offering will see a 6.7-megapixel rear-mounted snapper line up alongside a second 2-megapixel option up front. Further adding its imaging abilities, Carl Zeiss optics are included alongside the new Nokia Camera and Nokia Storyteller apps.

With a claimed 11 hour battery life, Nokia has suggested the Lumia 2520 will be able to achieve a 50 per cent recharge in just 40 minutes, a very handy addition.

For those with business centric needs, an attachable Nokia Power Keyboard has been unveiled alongside the tablet, with the addition peripheral bringing an added 5-hour battery life, two USB ports and a trackpad to the more user friendly input method.

The tablet will come pre-installed with an exclusive Nokia Music service, as well as the company’s Nokia Maps software which will include offline access to mapping data.

Nokia Lumia 2520 Release Date and Price
Although confirmed to be heading for retailers before the year’s out, a precise Nokia Lumia 2520 release date is still to be announced. The Finnish manufacturer has revealed the tablet will hit the UK, US and Finland this year before getting a global rollout next year. A Nokia Lumia 2520 price has been confirmed at $499 (£310).

The Nokia Power Keyboard will cost an additional $149.
