Nokia is planning to launch a 6-inch Windows Phone 8 phablet code-named Bandit by the end of the year, according to latest rumours.
Sources within Nokia have told The Verge that the Bandit will feature a 6-inch 1080p display, marking a progression from the current 720p resolution limit for the platform.
Another new component will apparently be the Nokia Bandit’s quad-core Qualcomm processor. At present, Windows Phone 8 only runs on dual-core chips.
Continuing the tradition of strong Nokia camera phones, the Nokia Bandit will apparently sport a 20-megapixel camera, lending the already-hefty device a slight hump on the back. If you’ve seen the Nokia Lumia 925 recently, you should have an idea what this will look like.
Unlike the Nokia Lumia 925, however, Nokia will revert to an all-polycarbonate body for the Bandit, though it’s still said to be thin and light.
Microsoft will soon update Windows Phone 8 to be able to support the new features set to be pushed in the Nokia Bandit. This will help create parity with Google’s Android OS, which has supported 1080p displays and quad-core architecture for some time now – though whether it has fully exploited these elements is a matter for debate.
For Windows Phone 8’s part, 1080p devices such as the Nokia Bandit will feature an additional column of Live Tiles on its Start screen.
It’s claimed that the Nokia Bandit is being tested as we speak on US network operator AT&T, and will make an appearance by the end of the year in that country at least.
