Nintendo has announced a host of new titles for the Nintendo Wii U in the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, including an all-new Legend of Zelda, Wii U Smash Bros. and Wii U Mario Kart.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confirmed that a brand new 3D Mario adventure is in development for the Nintendo Wii U by Nintendo EAD Tokyo, the team behind Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D Land for 3DS.

Iwata also announced that a new instalment of the Mario Kart franchise is being made for Nintendo Wii U. With Mario Kart Wii selling over 32 million units and Nintendo’s reputation of remaking the title for every Nintendo console, the announcement of the Mario Kart Wii U game is hardly surprising.

Zelda fans will be pleased to hear that an HD remake of the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker will be released for Wii U this year. Offering remastered graphics and GamePad functionality, the return of the 2003 GameCube game will no doubt please committed Zelda fans.

Also announced was the Smash Bros. Wii U game. Iwata said: “Smash Bros. is a huge development undertaking and we need more time before it launches”. Adding some words from Smash Bros. chief Masahiro Sakurai, he said: “Mr. Sakurai, who is leading the development efforts, told us: ‘We set the timing to reveal the game screens of the new Smash Bros. game at this year’s E3. Game development is on track. I would like to ask you to wait for just a little longer’.”

Nintendo also revealed that a new Yoshi game is in production by the team behind Kirby’s Epic Yarn, and Wii U Party will be hitting Nintendo’s newest console in the summer.
