Nintendo to announce Wii U release date

September is an exciting month in tech, not least because Nintendo may finally solidify the last details about its next-gen Wii U console on the 13th. At a US-only event, America President Reggie Fils-Aime is expected to unveil the final details on the machine – or rather, the eco-system, as the basic Wii U kit consists of a main console and ‘slave’ tablet with its own colour touch-screen, cameras and sensors.

We’re hoping for a launch in time for Christmas, and it would be nice if Europe wasn’t too far behind the US and Japan. We might also get a price, and it will be interesting to see if Nintendo can keep its Wii successor competitive despite the extra outlay for its tablet controller.

As the sequel to the Wii, the Wii U will have quite a battle on its hands, especially since its graphics apparently won’t be a massive improvement on those of rival Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. While innovation has always won Nintendo major brownie points, its overall games line-up for the original Wii hasn’t kept momentum, so here’s hoping the Wii U gets a great games library to go along with its unique controller.
