Nintendo has reported over 2 million units sales of its Nintendo 3DS handheld console, with the Wii U still having “a negative impact” on profits.

Overall hardware sales have increased significantly but Nintendo still posted a loss for its Q2 financial results.

Wii U sales have rebounded considerably following mid-year price cuts, with over 300,000 users added this quarter. This is almost double the 160,000 units sold in the previous quarter.

Nintendo still retains its target of selling 9 million units by March 2014, but so far it has only sold 3.91 million in total.

“Wii U hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits,” explained the Japanese electronics company, due to the Wii U price drop.

Nintendo posted a net loss of 8,024 million yen (around £51 million), compared to a quarterly profit of around £54 million) earlier this year because of the Wii U.

The Japanese company said it will be focused on “proactively releasing key first-part titles towards the coming year”, in an attempt to boost Wii U sales.

Unfortunately, interest in Nintendo’s next-generation console is likely to wane further in the next few months, with the Xbox One and PS4 release dates just around the corner on November 22 and November 29 respectively in the UK.

However, the company sold over 2 million 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL handheld consoles, putting the total lifetime figure at 35 million.

This figure is likely to jump up with the Pokemon X, Pokemon Y sales next quarter. Plus, Nintendo has launched two Pokemon special edition consoles and a special Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds 3DS XL console is coming out soon.

The Nintendo 2DS was released earlier this month as the budget, 3D-less alternative to the other 3DS models. This may well have an impact on profits during the next quarter.

The 3DS in all its various iterations outsold all other gaming hardware in September, proving the strength of the handheld console.
