Nintendo is gearing up to release its first smartphone game, Miitomo, but the primarily communication-based app hasn’t really grabbed the imagination of the firm’s ardent fans.
That will be remedied with the second mobile release with the company’s CEO now promising an old favourite will be involved.
Speaking at the firm’s quarterly earnings call on Tuesday evening, Tatsumi Kimishima (via WSJ) promised take two will return to the firm's specialty.
He said: “The second game won’t be another communication app, and we plan to adopt one of our characters that fans are very familiar with.”
Unfortunately, Kimishima didn’t clarify which of the company’s iconic characters will be introduced to mobile devices for the first time.
It may be one or both the Super Mario Bros. or their iconic friends and enemies? Or perhaps Link or another member of Legend of Zelda canon spearhead Nintendo’s real march into mobile gaming?

Other candidates include Donkey Kong, Samus Aran from Metroid or perhaps Fox McCloud from the Star Fox series. Place your bets or express your preferences in the comments section below.
Earlier on Wednesday, Nintendo confirmed the release window for Miitomo, with pre-registration opening on February 17 ahead of the March release in the UK, North America, Europe and Japan. The company also announced a new photo-sharing feature called Miifoto today.
Nintendo plans to launch five mobile games in total before 2017, in association with developer DeNA. The first is important, but the second already seems way more exciting.
