Waiting for the Nintendo NX? We’ve got some good news

The upcoming Nintendo NX console has reportedly entered “trial production”, ahead of its proposed March 2017 launch.

The first models of Nintendo’s mysterious next-gen console are now being manufactured in China, apparently. That’s according to industry news site Digitimes, which has an admittedly mixed record when it comes to accurate leaks.

According to the publication, Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn is chief producer of the console, with a view to eventually manufacture between 9.5 million and 10 million units yearly. The report also claims that some models will be built by Hosiden and Misumi Electronics, both of which are Japanese firms.

Last year, Nintendo announced a new console under the codename ‘NX’, which would be a “dedicated games platform with a brand new concept”. Then in April, Nintendo confirmed that the console would released in March next year, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild landing as a launch title for the NX.

Yesterday, during a company presentation, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot spoke positively about the Nintendo NX: “The new Nintendo [console] is a fantastic machine. It’s really a new approach, it’s really Nintendo, [which is] coming with something new again. We love it.”

Unfortunately, Nintendo has remained tight-lipped about the Nintendo NX console, so we still have little idea what it will actually look like, or the sort of hardware it will feature.

One report in August suggested that the Nintendo NX would feature a camera, while another claimed that the console would be a portable device that plugs into your TV, and that it would feature a breakaway controller. Nintendo has also reportedly secured third-party game support from big-name studios like Sega, Square Enix, Unisoft, Activision, and Warner Bros. Triple-A games for the NX are rumoured to include titles from the Pokémon, Mario, and Zelda franchises.
