The Nintendo NX will launch globally in March 2017, Nintendo has confirmed.
Nintendo made the announcement during an investor earnings call.
Nintendo of America later confirmed the news via Twitter:
Many expected the console to release during this year, around the holiday season.
It is surprising that Nintendo has decided to skip the Christmas period – the biggest sales season of the year – and wait almost an entire year between announcement and launch of its new console.
While many hoped to be playing a shiny new Nintendo console this year, it looks like we'll have to wait quite a bit longer before we get the NX in our hands.
Nintendo also confirmed that the NX will NOT be at this year's E3. The equally-surprising call suggests that Nintendo will host a bespoke Nintendo Direct much closer to the console's launch date.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that we have to wait another year for a new Nintendo console? Or with the already packed festive period, are you glad that there's a bit of a gap before Nintendo's new-gen console? Let us know in the comments below.
