Puzzle and Dragons: Super Mario Bros Edition is coming to Nintendo 3DS later this year.

Nintendo has licensed a 3DS version of popular mobile puzzler Puzzle and Dragons, with a Super Mario Bros theme.

Anyone who was hoping Mario might make the move to mobile anytime soon will be disappointed, as the smartphone hit Puzzle and Dragons is being made into a Mario-themed 3DS game.

Puzzle and Dragons: Super Mario Bros Edition mixes the game’s match-three-style gameplay with a Mario themed makeover.

The gems have recognisable Mario icons on them, and the villains are picked from the classic Mario rosta.

Nintendo also seems to have put its stamp on the game with a Mario World hub-like mechanic, perhaps making this mobile game more familiar to 3DS gamers.

Although there’s no confirmed release date for the Mario themed Puzzle and Dragons, it will be released on April 29 in Japan.

It’s one of the first major developments in Nintendo’s relationship with the mobile space.

The gaming industry and analysts of the sector have often talked about Nintendo’s need to move its gaming IPs from the confines of its hardware, like the 3DS and the Wii U.

However, Nintendo has continually distanced itself from such a move, but has admitted it is toying with strategies for the smartphone sector.

Nintendo meanwhile has also announced that it is making a move into the health monitoring business, with its first device to be some kind of non-intrusive, non-wearable sleep tracker that sits on your bedside table.
