Nintendo 3DS gets custom themes with new update

The Nintendo 3DS family now has custom theme support thanks to a new system update launched in the US and Europe.

Previously, all 3DS systems had the same, rather boring, white UI, regardless of the colourful outer casing option you’d purchased.

But not anymore. The new 3DS system update 9.0.0-20 for European and American gamers introduces the Theme Store to the handheld console.

It then allows you to customise the entire home menu by applying a variety of themes based on colours or Nintendo titles like Mario.

The theme is applies to the background, folders, music, sound effects and the icons themselves.

With the update, you’ll get five coloured themes for free – blue, black, pink, red and yellow. But there’s also the option to purchase more elaborate themes like stars, polka dots or ones with your favourite characters on.

These themes range in price from 89p to £1.79, making it an affordable way to pimp out your 3DS.

Themes can be changed within the Home Menu Settings menu.

Sony also released a similar update for the PS Vita last week, introducing themes to personalise the system’s Start and Home screens, icons and background music.

The latest 3DS update also allows users to take screengrabs of the home menu, basically so you can show off your new theme to your pals.

Of course, there are also improvements to the overall stability of the 3DS and slight tweaks to the user experience coming with the update.
