Nikon D4S launched as new FX-format flagship

The Nikon D4S has been launched as the brand new FX-format flagship from Nikon.

Building on the success of the Nikon D4 in the professional photographing circuit, the D4S introduces an expanded ISO range and the Expeed 4 image processing engine.

“The Nikon D4S follows the success of the D4 and brings with it a new level of performance designed to meet the needs of the most demanding photographers”, said Hiro Sebata, Professional Product Manager at Nikon UK. “Nikon engineers have taken on board valuable feedback from professional users in order to implement a wealth of improvements that will make all the difference to professionals working in the intensely competitive fields of sports, press, and nature photography.”

Nikon D4S Features
The Nikon D4S features a revamped 16.2-megapixel FX-format sensor, coupled with an expanded ISO range of 100 – 25600 can even be extended to an equivalent 409600.

Performance has been improved by Nikon’s latest Expeed 4 image processing engine, which should further improve image rendering.

It is now capable of offering an 11fps burst rate with auto focus, up from 10fps, and the camera is protected by a weather-sealed full metal body. There are slight design changes to button layout and the control buttons have been reshaped to make the D4S easier to use in wet weather, helped by slight design tweaks and smoother grip.

The D4S has a Gigabit 100/1000TX Ethernet port and can now offer RAW Size S option for speedier file transfers.

The shutter lag has also been reduced to just 42ms and the shutter and mirror mechanism has been redesigned to reduce mirror bounce and viewfinder blackout for high-speed shooting.

Nikon’s 51-point AF system has been improved with the D4S too, with enhanced lock-on and expanded “store by orientation”. The D4S also offers a new Group Area AF mode, allowing more control over the size of the AF area and the ability to constantly monitor five different AF fields.

Like with the D4, you can configure the D4S’s AF system in 9-, 21- or 51- coverage settings and it is sensitive down to -2 EV.

The Nikon D4S is also capable of shooting full 1080p HD movies in FX-format at 60p/50p/30p and DX-format at 25p/24p frame rates.

Nikon D4S Release Date and Price

The Nikon D4S will be available from March 6 for £5,199.99 body only.
