Nikon Coolpix S6600 introduces hinged LCD and gesture controls

Nikon has revealed a new compact camera, the Nikon Coolpix S6600, which is the first in the S-range to sport a hinged LCD display.

The company is calling the addition a “vari-angle monitor,” as it enables a range of shooting angles, including self-portraits (see image below). The display swings all the way out to the side of the camera, as well as rotating through 360 degrees.

Another neat feature is the ability to control the camera through gestures – again, with self portraits and other awkward shooting angles in mind. Rotate the monitor frontwards for a ‘selfie’ and icons will automatically appear on the screen. Move your hand towards these to control the shutter and zoom functions.

Besides these quirky headline features, the Nikon Coolpix S6600 has some fairly solid specs. These include a 16-megapixel backside illuminated (BSI) images sensor and a 12x optical zoom Nikkor lens with a 25mm to 300mm focal range. The lens also has a built-in lens-shift vibration reduction function.

Target Finding AutoFocus will identify your subject and lock-on, which should help in busy or active scenes, as well as in selecting the appropriate focal area.

The Nikon Coolpic S6600 can shoot 1080p video with a dedicated video-record button, and you can also pause and resume recording of a single video event rather than separating it into lots of little clips.

Built-in Wi-Fi should ensure hassle-free connectivity when it comes to transferring those angled shots to your computer or smart device (via an app).

There’s no information on pricing or potential release dates for the Nikon Coolpix S6600 as yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
