Nikon Coolpix P510 Offers 42x Optical Zoom

The Nikon Coolpix P500 had a class-leading 36x zoom lens when we reviewed it last year, but Nikon has not been resting on its laurels and has announced the Coolpix P510 which boasts a huge 42x optical lens.

With compact system cameras (CSC) rather outshining the superzoom category in the last year or so, Nikon has obviously decided that the only way these cameras will have a future is if they offer something we won’t get on a CSC.

And so Nikon has stuck a 42x optical Nikkor zoom lens which has a 24mm-1000mm equivalent zoom (in 35mm terms), onto the front of the new Coolpix P510. It has paired this with a 16.1 megapixel backside illuminated CMOS sensor.

You will also get a 3in tiltable 920k-dot LCD screen on the rear, inbuilt GPS, and 1080p video recording. It will also feature a HDMI port to let you output your pictures and video directly to a HDTV. The new superzoom champion will go on sale on 22 March for £399.99 and will be available in black, red and dark grey.

Nikon has also announced a couple of more affordable superzooms today. The first is the Coolpix L810 which has a 26x Nikkor zoom lens, with a 22mm-585mm range. It will be capable of shooting 720p video and comes with a 16.1 megapixel CCD sensor. It will be powered by AA batteries.

The L810, which will be available in black, red, blue and bronze, will go on sale on 22 March for £229.99.

Next up is the even more affordable L310, which boasts a 21x optical zoom lens (25mm-525mm), 14 megapixel CCD sensor, ISO up to 6400, four anti-blur technologies, 720p video and a 3in LCD screen.

The L310 has a dedicated movie record button and 17 scene modes and is again powered by four AA batteries.
