Nikon adds image stabilisation to beloved camera lens

Nikon has improved its highly regarded 24-70mm f/2.8 len camera lens with image stabilisation.

If you’re a camera enthusiast, and certainly if you’re a professional photographer, you’ll have heard of Nikon’s legendary Nikkor 24-70mm lens. Its accuracy and flexibility have made it a go-to lens for many high-end snappers.

Now it seems as if the best just got better.

The AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8E ED VR, to give the new lens its official name, offers a new optical construction, electromagnetic aperture control, and a new vibration reduction system. The latter feature’s the headliner here, leading to significantly steadier shots.

As Dpreview points out, the new lens has a nine-blade rounded aperture, and now uses 82mm filters rather than the 77mm filters of the old model.

Additionally, the new 24-70mm lens has a fluorine coating that should make it easier to clean than before. It’s completely weather-sealed, as you might expect from such a high-grade piece of photographic kit.

The only drawback that we can see is a predictable one – the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8E ED VR will be expensive. It’s set to ship on August 27 for ¥287,500, which works out to a little under £1,500. Ouch.
