There were many, many things from the Back to the Future trilogy which we dreamed of one day being able to use for ourselves – hoverboards, auto re-sizing jackets, flying cars, not to mention the time-travelling DeLorian itself.

Now however one other item used by Marty McFly in the Future is set to become a reality. Nike is holding a press conference this evening and all the indications point to the launch of the self-lacing Air Mag trainers.

A 46-second video, entitled McFly's Closet and posted on YouTube by a DocEmmettBrown88, shows a camera slowly moving through a room of shelves stacked high with the very same Air Mags Marty McFly used in Back to the Future II.

While there is no official word from Nike as yet, the company is hardly likely to go to the effort of creating such a viral campaign to promote a shoe which doesn’t exist.

Nike already has a patent for “footwear with an automatic lacing system,” so there seems to be little preventing the company from showing us the future.

Despite the evolution of smartphones, tablets, 3D and the myriad of other technological advancements seen in recent years, we are still tying our own shoe laces and surely we won’t truly see the future until we remove this burden from our lives.

Update: Nike has officially announced the Nike Air MAGs but unfortunately you're not likely to see them in your local Sports Direct store any time soon. Nike are initially making just 1500 pairs and will be auctioning them off, 150 pairs at a time, over the next ten days.

You can bid on the trainers on eBay but with such limited availability we expect them to cost a little more than your average pair of Air Max. In a nice move by Nike, all the money raised by the auction will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Unfortunately, while the Air Mags do look exactly like those from the film - including the lights and electroluminescent Nike logo - the trainers are not self-lacing, that feature is not coming until 2015 according to the Nike ad!
