Nike to launch smartwatch in early 2014?

Sporting behemoth Nike looks set to be the latest manufacturer to launch its own smartwatch offering, with the fitness-themed gadget expected early next year.

Following swiftly on the heels of the recently launched Nike FuelBand SE, the American sportswear giant looks set to expand its wearable offerings, with DigiTimes reporting that a new Nike smartwatch will officially launch during “the first half of 2014.”

Although no official details or specs are currently available on the mooted device, it is expected that a new Nike Smartwatch would build on the company’s past sportswatch offering – made in partnership with TomTom – with new smartphone-syncing capabilities.

Although Nike has yet to offer any official indication that a new smartwatch is in the works, we have contacted the company for a formal comment. We will update this post shortly with any response.

Adding backing to its claims of an early 2014 release, DigiTimes has citied “sources in Taiwan’s supply chain” in suggesting that the Nike Smartwatch is already in production, with the techy wrist wear being pieced together by EMS firm Flextronics International.

Last month, Nike’s lead rival Adidas launched its first sports watch device, with the Adidas miCoach Smart Watch hitting the market alongside a premium £350 price tag. Although deterring some with its price, the Adidas watch packs in an integrated heart rate monitor.
