The last time the Nike Mag, the fabled self-lacing shoes from Back to the Future Part II, went on sale it was through an eBay auction to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Even though they were replicas, minus the self-tightening tech from the movie, they traded for thousands and only the super-rich ever got to walk around like Marty McFly circa October 2015.
Now, Nike has announced a 2016 Nike Mag shoe with actual adaptive fit (power laces!) and this time it is adopting a democratic approach to dishing them out.
89 pairs of the iconic sneakers will be raffled off at Nike.com/mag and via the Nike app.
Tickets for the draw are available until October 11 for $10 a pop, with no limit on how many you can buy. All the proceeds will again go the Foundation, which seeks a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
In 2011, $10m was raised through sales in ten days, but with the adaptive fit tech developed for the HyperAdapt 1.0 shoe actually on board this time, we wouldn’t be surprised to see that number smashed.
While it isn’t a sure thing, like buying a copy of Gray’s Sports Almanac, the raffle does give everyone a far better shot than the last time they went on sale
The raffle is only open to residents of the United States and Canada right now, so Brits will need to hit up a cousin on the other side of the pond in order to get involved.
