In recent months we’ve seen an explosion in the sports tracker market with the Fitbit Ultra, Jawbone Up and Motorola’s MotoACTV all coming out. Now Nike has updated its offering with the Nike Fuelband.
Nike already has a wristband on the market in the shape of the Nike SportBand which was launched over two years ago. The new band however has many more bells and whistles with the addition of NikeFuel the most interesting of them.
NikeFuel, displayed through the 20 LED dot-matrix display, is a measure of how active you have been with the more lights illuminated up the better. According to the company, NikeFuel is “a normalized score that awards equal points for the same activity regardless of physical makeup."
The wristband uses an accelerometer to track how many steps you’ve taken, calories you’ve burned and how much of the day you’ve been active. The 20 LEDs go from red to green as the user gets closer to their preset goal for the day.
The FuelBand syncs with the Nike website through a built-in USB, or wirelessly through Bluetooth to a free iPhone app, to record activity and track progress every day.
The Nike Fuelband will be available for pre-order starting 19 January in the US at Nikestore.com for a suggested retail price of $149. We’re trying to establish when or if the Nike Fuelband will come to the UK and how much it wil cost.
Let us know in the comments if the Fuelband is something which would get you off the couch or if you think it would just be an expensive wristband.
Update: Nike's UK press office have confirmed to us that the FuelBand will be coming to the UK but not until MAy when it will cost £139. It will be available online as well as in NikeTown retail stores.
