Nexus 7 Android 5.0 Lollipop update now available

Asus has just announced that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update has begun rolling out across Nexus 7 devices.

The Asus-built, Google-stamped tablet is part of the first wave of devices to see the new software after it launched earlier this month.

Lollipop is landing free-of-charge for Nexus 7 users, and the software will be pushed over-the-air to both 2012 and 2013 Wi-Fi models.

Therein lies the caveat however, as Asus has revealed users who forked out for the 3G/LTE Nexus 7 variant won’t be getting the update until the beginning of December.

Android 5.0 Lollipop is a pretty big overhaul as far as Google’s mobile updates go.

For starters, the OS has undergone a fairly grand aesthetic re-jig dubbed ‘material design’ that proffers a flatter, colourful, more paper-like approach to grubbing about on your device.

There’s also boosted battery life, as well as Bluetooth Smart, a low-energy Bluetooth-specific mode that’ll see juice-drain when pairing reduced significantly.

Other features include improved cross-platform functionality, 64-bit chip architecture support and – wait for it – lock-screen notifications. It’s like Christmas come early, eh?

If you’re not toting a Nexus 7, here’s our round-up of when your device should be getting Lollipop. Be warned – it’ll be a bit of a wait for some of you.
