New leaked log files have revealed that the Google Nexus 5 could pack a fast and powerful MEMs camera, the fastest ever seen in a smartphone.
There has already been a wealth of leaks surrounding the Nexus 5 specs, but the latest log files suggest the next Google smartphone will have a very powerful and unique rear camera.
The Nexus 5 could have a rear MEMs camera, which stands for microeletrocmechanical technology. Cryptic acronyms aside, an MEMs camera is capable of focusing seven times faster than any existing smartphone camera and can take multiple snaps in no time at all.
A quick succession of shots can be taken rapidly, meaning if an object isn’t moving fast you can shoot first and focus later, similar to the way the Lytro camera functions.
Focusing in a fraction of a second, the Nexus 5 could be the first smartphone to bring an MEMs camera into the mainstream market.
An MEMs camera unit is also still as small, if not smaller, than the current voice coil motors (VCMs) used in smartphone cameras.
Another benefit is that the power consumption of a MEMs camera is around 1mW, hundreds of times less than VCMs.
The Nexus 5 has already been spotted in several images, which show the distinct 8-megapixel rear camera module on Google’s next flagship. The rear camera is also tipped to have an f/2.4 aperture and a sensor size of 1/3.2-inches. The minimum focusing length for such a MEMs camera is 10cm.
Along with this enhanced camera technology, the Nexus 5 is tipped to have a 5.2-inch 1920 x 1080p Full HD resolution display with an ultra-slim bezel design akin to the LG G2.
Running on a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor with 3GB of RAM, the Nexus 5 should be the first device to run Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.
Google is expected to launch the Nexus 5 on October 14 at a dedicated event.
