Nexus 5 2014 with Android 5.0 Lion allegedly leaks

A fresh leak provides a possible new angle for the naming of Google's next flagship phone, as well as for the next version of Android.

Many had been expecting the follow-up to last year's Google Nexus 5 to be called the Google Nexus 6, both reflecting that it was the next in the series and the larger size of the display.

However, according to a leaked benchmark screen provided by @emtleaks, that's not the case. Rather, it could simply be called the "Google Nexus 5 (2014)."

The makes sense on a couple of levels. For one thing, Google's naming system has always been more about the display size than the version - hence the Google Nexus 7 is a 7-inch tablet rather than some amazing future phone.

Sure enough, the same set of leaks suggests that the so-called Nexus 5 2014 will have a 5.2-inch display. There may well be a 6-inch model in the works too, of course. It seems to be the done thing to launch two sizes of flagship phone simultaneously.

Also, this wouldn't be the first time Google has followed such a naming scheme. The second 7-inch tablet it launched following on from the Google Nexus 7 was called the Google Nexus 7 2013.

Another interesting point to emerge from these apparent leaks is the suggestion of a name for what we've only known to this point as Android 5.0 L. It suggests that Google could be following the licensed brand lead of KitKat in opting for Lion.

Finally, we get a breakdown of the alleged Google Nexus 5 2014's specs. Besides that 5.2-inch display - which will sport a 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution - it'll have a 2.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor backed by 3GB of RAM. There'll also be 32GB of storage and a 12-megapixel main camera.

How much of this information is sound, we're not sure at this point. But a lot of it makes a certain kind of sense.

I wish I wish I wish they'd make a small screen alternative, like the Xperia Compact range. All the good bits but smaller.

Yes, like a 4.7 with exact same internals, no compromises.

Yup, this needs to happen more often!

Yes, "Lion", because Google will agree to using an OS X codename for Android.

I don't think so.

How come everyone now trusts emtleaks as a source?

Lion is also the name of a Nestlé candy bar just as KitKat is.

September 9, 2014, 6:16 pm

Yes I know what a Lion Bar is, but being a confectionery means squat if it's used in the name of a rival company's product. It's like Apple calling the next version of OS X, "OS X NT"

Okay these are awesome specs! I hope they built a 13megapixel cam?, cause every new phone have this resolution...:) No matter the Nexus 6 will be the best phone on the market! :D

If this phone has front facing speakers, i would throw my money at Google. This could be the best phone of the year.

It would be pretty funny though, and the Apple Fanboys would be so butt hurt.

especially if the OEM making it is Motorola and the devices takes some inspiration from the new Moto X.
