Next Photoshop for iPhone will be much closer to the real thing

Adobe is working on a new version of its Photoshop Mobile app for iPhone and iPad, which will bring more powerful editing tools to touchscreen users.

The new app, known under its codename Project Rigel, will arrive in October at Adobe’s Max conference, a CNET report has revealed.

According to Adobe’s Manu Anand, the free Project Rigel will introduce a more accessible app, allowing users of all skill-sets to access popular tools like content aware fill and spot healing.

The senior product manager for digital imaging said: “Project Rigel is designed and built in a way that serves the needs of professionals familiar with retouching tools on the desktop, but more so for people not familiar with Photoshop tools like content-aware fill or spot healing. It democratizes them and makes them easier to use.”

The new touchscreen interface will feature a menu of editing options across the foot of the app, while there’ll be pop up tool adjustments and a new zoom ability that’ll make it easier to fine tune edits.

There’s also facial recognition technology, according to the report, which hasn’t even arrived on the PC version yet.

Rather than being used to identify and tag friends, it’ll enable Photoshop users to edit facial features. It’ll be easier to accentuate smiles, tint and enlarge eyes, etc.

Until now Adobe’s mobile offerings have been some what of an afterthought, while consumers have flocked to easy editing and sharing solutions like Instagram.

With the firm now seeking to sell subscriptions to its Creative Cloud services, rather than standalone product, stepping up mobile access is paramount.
