Multitouch and a much improved UI create lofty expectations...
Following the Philips Cinema 21:9, hands up anyone who thought we’d see this aspect ratio next ”in a phone”…?
Well clearly LG did as a leaked video of its latest LG Chocolate range addition, dubbed the ‘BL40’, shows off a 4in 800 x 344 pixel 21:9 display (probably AMOLED for good measure). Whether this is pure gimmick or could actually have some real world practicality is yet to be seen. From the video sending messages and scrolling through contacts benefits greatly though using the landscape virtual keyboard (and there’s not much hope for the portrait one) doesn’t leave much space for anything else.
Perhaps more exciting however is LG has fitted a capacitive touchscreen to the BL40 which means the company can now embrace multitouch navigation. Furthermore, the troublesome UI – something LG never seems to master – finally looks up to scratch. Let’s pray it isn’t a superficial bit of wallpapering.
Elsewhere 7.2Mbit HSDPA, aGPS and a 5MP camera with flash are all shown off though sadly a potential release date is only described as “2009 Coming Soon” and given this video was spilt early we have no idea what the context for ”soon” is.
That said, this is the most exciting LG handset I’ve seen to date – and by quite some distance…
